A series of eight postcards will be designed ahead of time and distributed throughout the festival in a variety of ways including shop-dropping, handing out during the events, and giving to business owners and strangers to disperse in any manner they desire.

The postcards function as traditional postcards in that they are designed to be used as well as collected and they each contain a caption with some tie (however fanciful) to the geographic, atmospheric (head space), or artistic vision of Central Finland.

The Wildland Urban Interface is group of like-minded individuals who aim to make work considering the division between the natural world and the world that is natural to most of us. Current members: Jonathan Johnson (Ohio, USA), Jonathan Rattner (Tennessee, USA), John Engelbrecht (Iowa, USA) and Chris Mortenson (Illinois, USA).

Matti Niinimäki presents his work “Mixed Up” at the Jyväskylä Art Museum on Thursday the 10th of March. For the most part, this body of work combines sensory-technology using household appliances from the last decade. Broken food processors, baking machines and cleaning devices have found a new life as electronic musical instruments and controls. The work looks at everyday gestures along with the terms used in food preparation and household cleaning which have a surprising resemblance to electronic music.

The event also includes a short performance in which Niinimäki plays part of an improvised audiovisual piece. His instruments are an old iron and a blender. This performance provides a unique occasion to see and hear a short except of a larger work in progress.

Marko Timlin, from Helsinki, performs with darkness around him. Spread out in front of him is his Sensor-Sound-Machine, a self-made digital instrument, which comes alive with the light of a torch.

Timlin employs improvisation and non-linear digital sensor systems to create music in which a delicate balance exists between the world of the organic and the world of the machine. A music at once intuitive and outlandish. Explosive and subdued. Violent and meditative. Timlin’s concerts are like a magic carpet ride over wondrous soundscapes surrounded by lights, electronic sounds and sonic vibrations. Listen to electrons collide, creaking machines, organic digital entities, panicking technology and structured chaos.

He has developed an intuitive interaction with his custom made SENSOR-SOUNDMACHINE maintaining a subtle balance between order and chaos. His music happens in real-time, often surprising the artist as well as the audience.
His performances are effectively a dialog between man and machine.

As Timlin states: Let’s abuse technology, as the really interesting sounds linger in-between the ‘1s’ and ‘0s’!

–

The For You! project would like to stop passersby in order to bring them joy, insight and enthusiasm. You only need to be bold enough to approach art, to take it and to participate. It is For you!

The project is accomplished with the help of abandoned envelopes in which there are fragments from the Live Herring ‘11 Text | Sound |Technology | Information exhibition at the Jyväskylä Art Museum from February 22nd until March 6th. The person who finds the envelope, is invited to make their own art from the fragments inside.

The finder is asked to participate by bringing their creation back to the Art Museum. In this way, something collective can become personal and something personal can become collective. Something from the everyday can become something special, and something special can become part of the everyday.

The goal of this project is to surprise various passersby. To inspire. To invite them into the (new)media-art exhibition, to encourage further surprise and inspiration.

The project For You! will take place in Jyväskylä during the 9th week of this year. Rosa Ahokas and Maiju Laitanen from the University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Art and Culture Studies will be conducting this project. This project is part of the New Media-Art, Art Education course directed by Päivi Hintsanen and Soile Ollikainen of the Live Herring workgroup.
